How to record clean voice on your phone
Viewers forgive a slightly blurry video much more easily than bad sound. Echo, fan noise and traffic make people swipe away, and they also make automatic captions less accurate. The good news is that most audio problems are fixed before you press record, for free. This guide covers the habits that matter most, then how to rescue a recording that is already noisy.
1. Get the phone closer
Distance matters more than any setting. The microphone hears your voice and the room; the closer you are, the more of it is you. If you record at arm's length, the room echo is almost as loud as your voice. At 20 to 30 centimetres it is much quieter.
If you film yourself from further away, record the sound separately on a second phone placed just out of shot, or use a clip-on microphone, and line the audio up afterwards.
2. Choose a soft room
Hard, empty rooms echo. Rooms with a bed, curtains, carpets, sofas and a full cupboard sound much better. A simple trick is to record facing an open wardrobe full of clothes. Avoid kitchens and bathrooms with tiles. Many creators record their voiceovers sitting on a bed with a blanket over their head and the phone, and it genuinely works.
3. Switch off the noise you can control
- Turn off fans and AC for the length of the take. They create a steady hum that is easy to miss while recording and obvious on headphones.
- Put the phone on airplane mode or do-not-disturb so notifications do not interrupt.
- Close windows facing the road, and record at quieter times of day.
- Keep the fridge, generator or UPS in another room if you can.

4. Phone settings
- Use the phone's main camera app or voice recorder rather than recording inside a social app; the quality is often better.
- If your phone has a "voice" or "interview" recording mode, try it for talking videos. Some phones also have a wind noise reduction setting; turn it on outdoors.
- Do a 10-second test and listen on headphones before recording the whole thing.
5. Watch your levels
Speak at a steady, comfortable volume. If you shout, the sound clips and crackles, and that cannot be fixed later. If you whisper, the noise floor becomes loud when the volume is raised. Keep the same distance from the phone throughout; moving closer and further away makes the volume go up and down.
6. Cheap microphones that are worth it
A wired or wireless clip-on (lavalier) microphone is the best value upgrade for talking videos. It sits a hand's width from your mouth and ignores much of the room. Check that it has the right plug for your phone (USB-C or Lightning) or a matching adapter. For voiceovers, any USB microphone used close to the mouth is a big step up from a laptop's built-in microphone.
Fixing audio that is already noisy
Noise removal tools work by learning what the voice sounds like and turning down everything else. They are very good at steady noise like fans, AC and traffic hum, and less good at other people talking, music or sudden bangs.
- Open the free Clean audio tool and choose your video or audio file.
- Run the noise removal and listen to the before and after on headphones.
- If the voice starts to sound robotic or underwater, use a lighter setting. A little background noise sounds more natural than an over-processed voice.
- Download the cleaned file and use it in your editor, or run captions on it for better accuracy.
Removing music from a voice
If you recorded with music playing in the background, a separation tool can split the voice from the music. It works best when the voice is louder than the music. Expect some artefacts; it is a rescue, not a replacement for a clean recording.
A quick routine
Phone close, soft room, fan off, ten-second test, headphones check. Those five habits fix most audio problems before they happen, and they take less than a minute.
